September Kits at Owl Tree Studio for Digital Scrapbooking

Hi folks! Just wanted to drop a quick note and show a peek of all the great kits and bonuses at Owl Tree Studio for September. I had a lot of fun designing the Grungy Bots kit geared towards scrapping for boys. I know there are lot of materials out there that tend towards the feminine look…so this theme and focus was a great challenge. All the kits are fabulous and I can’t wait to start scrapping with them. I’ve been so busy this past month with summer activities, but now that Fall is approaching I think things will go back to routine.

For a closer view, see the reveal post to click for larger images. Also consider joining Owl Tree Studio for full digital scrapbooking kits on a monthly basis for a low price – not to mention all the bonuses and great community within! Ciao ciao for now scrappers.

A little book of quotable quotes…

I saw a video on the Hero Arts blog where Lisa Spangler created a little book of fortunes. I loved the idea and created my own, but for quotable quotes. I used some Japanese washi papers I had lying around and stamped inside with the Hero Arts Artistic Grapes stamp set. The green coloring on the inside pages is peeled paint Distress Ink – my favorite color!

I also used old dictionary pages, with words relating to each quote. I like the contrast of the formal Japanese design on the outside, that goes all grungy on the inside pages. It was really fun to create this book and super simple in terms of bookbinding techniques. I personally scored all my pages to create a gutter area for the binding. This way they are easy to flip already. This kind of binding takes up a chunk of the page on the left side, but it does make it all nice and neat. I’m realizing how easy this kind of binding is and how much more secure it is than rings, for example, for minibooks!

A few simple cards today…

I’ve been so busy these days, making journals…I decided to create a few handmade cards to get back into the groove of things. I printed out some of my digital stamps and just had a bit of regression coloring them in. Of course, I got tired of coloring in completely real quick and just did some outlining. I realized it looks sort of cool just to outline in color as well, not necessarily filling in the image all with color. I ended up with these two cards, inspired by the challenges over at digital tuesday and dare u 2 digistamp.

I love how challenges can help inspire you to create…yay! Thanks for stopping by.

Wedding Postcards Scrapbook Layout

I had a few photos from my wedding lying around and decided to do a monochromatic type of layout. Just black and white with the sepia tone of the photos themselves. I had designed them to be postcards to be sent out, but they never went out in the end!

I used plain white cardstock for the paper with black ink doodling all around the border. Everything else was just black type printed from the computer and the resuse of a black clothing tag. The white tulle is also leftover from the wedding… pretty simple and clean, but I like it so much!

Italia Scrapbook Page in a Frame

I’ve been heavy on the digital side of scrapbooking these days and besides making minibooks, haven’t really created an old fashioned paper page in a while. One my issues is the want to use bulky items that would obviously not work for putting in a scrapbook album. Also, after moving to Italy things changed drastically because I don’t have access to many scrapbooking products. Although I still love playing with new products, I’m also relieved that I can’t buy as much as I could before. It makes me get more creative and even more importantly – focus less on the cute and stylish products and more on my scrapbooking memory. I have also learned so much from my membership to the Paperclipping videos, helping me understand the design principles in scrapbooking instead of focusing on specific products. As part of the Paperclipping Festival Event – sort of blog hop coming up soon – I wanted to create something to show what I’ve learned and participate with the community. I decided to change up the rules a bit and create a scrapbook page in a frame. The shadow box format allows me to bulk up the page as much as I want. It was so liberating to give myself the permission to create without the worries of archival materials, staying inside the page or limiting my layers.

My idea was to mix a grungy and loose style with the classic, rustic feel of a Tuscan lifestyle. It’s when things look sort of casual, but still so put together and detailed at the same time…European chic perhaps? So I started my page with a piece of cardstock inked up with yellow, green and brown colors – drawing from the warm colors of the photo of me and my husband. The colors gives the background a bit of texture as well as creating a horizon line, anchoring the whole page. I added a piece of white veil material for more texture then layered journaling tag shapes, corrugated cardboard and my photo together as the focal point. Then there’s the big white flower embellishment, with little bits around it to form the grouping. I included my favorite pasta shape – cellentani - to mimic the swirls of the flower along with a piece of cork and twine embellishment. These are everyday items from our Italian home – both evoking the memory of good food and drink we enjoy so much here in Italy. In the upper right hand corner you can actually see a bit of my reflection in the tag while taking the photo! It’s a golden tag recycled from a clothing purchase – I even use the original ribbon, adding a heart brad to finish it off. The last item I stuck on was the title “italia.” It’s handcut from a piece of brown cardstock, with white acrylic paint on the edges and then heat embossed with sparkly clear powder. You can see more close-ups of various spots of the page below.

Throughout the entire process I used a lot of principles I learned from Paperclipping videos. Episode 144-How to Mix Styles and episode 142-Scrapbooking With Everyday Items both come to mind, just to name a few. More than anything, I really enjoyed the process of creating with freedom, letting myself go and having fun while reminiscing a great memory. The photo was taken during a day trip to San Gimignano and we do these day trips quite often actually. It’s something I love so much about living here in Italy. There’s always something to explore, something new to see and so much story and history in everything around us. I soon realized that Italy just changed my perspective on life. I’m sure it was a combination of many life changes, but now I see all the visual delights around me and have learned to indulge in the senses…really enjoying your life to the fullest. When I look at this page that is what I will remember…the magic of this land we call “italia” that changed my life and our life together.

Corrugated Cardboard Book in progress

In the past few weeks, I’ve noticed more and more often the use of corrugated cardboard in scrapbook layouts and crafting in general. I’m sure it’s always been there, but I saw Marion on ustream using it for a layout and also cutting out flowers with it…combining the rough look with really glitzy pretty stuff as well. Then I saw episode 144 of Paperclipping that totally encouraged mixing styles, including an example of corrugated cardboard use – thus adding it into my creative vocabulary. When I saw a cardboard box that had a thicker double layer structure I was literally pushed into starting a new project – immediately!

I used some inspiration from many of the fabulous bookmakers out there and added some leather strips to my cardboard book covers, sewing up the book quickly and roughly. You can tell it’s a bit roughly done – I didn’t measure anything because I was just entranced in making what was in my mind – a real thing.

I’m really surprised how nicely it came together with little planning and have realized that over time I am liking the grungy look more and more. I suppose it comes a bit naturally if you start to use more recycled materials. For example, I never buy chipboard or bookboard…I just use cardboard, food boxes, backing of notepads, etc. My task now is to embellishment this eclectic book in a fashion that contrasts with the rough and tough look it currently has. Pretty bright flowers perhaps? White lace? One thing I noticed was the ripping of the cardboard to expose the inner textured part results in a lot of linting…I’m not sure if I did something wrong or if I have to spray fixative on it. If anyone has tips, please let me know!

Our first couple photo scrapbook page

From what I can find, this would be one of our first couple photos back in 2003. I created this page digitally using a wedding themed digital kit, even though it’s obviously not a wedding photo!  Check out A Delightful Day free digital kit and see what you can do with it!

Looking Snazzy!

Another day and another digital scrapbook page, as I go back into the files. It’s amazing how fast we forget about all the great memories in our past and the dates and occurences… this is why I love scrapbooking so much. I love sharing as well, reminding the whole family of great times and fun times. Here’s my page for today…Ale looking snazzy when we were dressed up for a wedding in the USA.

I actually used a holiday digital kit primarily… the free kit by Cherie Mask called be merry and a few elements from the back 2 school free kit by Shannon Freeman. You can definitely mix things up and use whatever you see fit…not necessarily even what the designer envisioned :)
